The Mustangs defeated the Northwest Lions by a score of 42-0 in the first home football game of the season.

Jason Powers, senior, threw three of the touchdown passes.

“It was awesome,” Powers said. “We had everybody there, breaking out the turf. It was a perfect night.”

This victory marks the team’s second consecutive victory since opening up the season at Ritenour last Friday.

“We came in, did what we had to do and got the win,” Powers said.

Highlights of the game include two 30-yard catches by wide receiver Turner Cook, senior, and a 70-yard touchdown run by running back Xavier Jackson, junior.

“It was great,” Matt Klein, varsity football coach, said of his team’s performance. “We came in and did what he had to do early to get the win. Any time you get a big crowd in the stands, the kids start to feed on that and they have a higher level of energy. I hope we can have that every week.”

The game marked the first varsity game on the new artificial turf, which had been installed this summer as part of Prop 4, a $68.95 million bond issue given to the district to update and enhance its schools.

“Its an excellent facility. We’d practiced on it a little bit over the week but our kids just came out with very high energy. They were pumped up to be able to play on the field for the first time,” Klein said.
