As Adam Ancel, junior, won his final match on Monday, he realized the j.v. boys golf team had just completed an undefeated season.
“We had that locked in mindset of knowing that we needed to play better that made us win all of our matches,” Ancel said.
The j.v. boys golf team completed a 10-0 undefeated season, with their final victory against Liberty High School on Monday, with a score of 254-264.
Ancel said the team was more focused during practice which contributed to their success.
“I like the team aspect of it, like we all have to work together to win and it’s not just a single person sport,” Ancel said.
Kevin Schultz, assistant coach of the boys golf team, said they practice specific drills often in order to enhance their performance at tournaments.
“We spend a lot of time on our shorthand and putting green,” Schultz said. “I’m a big believer in working on 5 to 10-foot putts pretty consistently.”
Schultz said even though golf is an individual sport, playing as a team is important.
“Clearly there’s individual medalist honors where we try to make sure we reward whoever played the best on that day,” Schultz said. “But the team aspect of things is knowing that even if you were not at your best, you can still help the team.”
Initially, Ben Favazza, junior, said the j.v. boys were convinced they wouldn’t be as successful as the team has been in the past.
“We had no one that played at State before, and we had a lot of younger guys on the team,” Favazza said. “We just kind of told ourselves that we had to meet the standard that we had last year when we still had our seniors, and I guess it worked.”
