Brooke Scheidler, senior, walked alone onto the dark stage in front of the curtain and waited for the lights to focus on her.
“It was a little intimidating because I needed to watch the curtain fly down and then walk on stage to prepare myself,” Scheidler said.
Scheidler performed in her last show choir performance on Friday, April 24, where she sang “My House” from the musical “Matilda” as her senior solo.
At the annual spring show choir concert, each senior is given the opportunity to sing a solo between group acts.
“It’s a good way to recognize seniors, their time in the program, and the talent they brought,” Scheidler said.
Scheidler has been in show choir since she was a freshman and said she has grown to really enjoy it.
“I get to sing and dance instead of doing anything academic,” Scheidler said.
Jason Winter, choir director, has directed the show choir for the last 20 years.
“I like show choir because it’s another avenue for helping students find a passion for loving music,” Winter said.
Winter said he started the senior solo tradition early in his career to elongate the show.
“We typically had about five or six seniors, and it’s just kind of developed into something that we’ve done every year,” Winter said.
This year there are 25 people in the show choir, including three seniors: Grey Burnett, Sofia Chirco and Brooke Scheidler.
“The talent level in a top ensemble is really high,” Winter said. “Oftentimes there are students that are super talented that never get an opportunity to show their talents.”
Sofia Chirco, senior, has been in show choir for the past three years and sang “Astonishing” from the musical “Little Women.”
“Most of the time, you pick a song that means something to you or that’s close to your heart,” Chirco said. “The song has great symbolism for moving on to bigger and better things.”
“It’s to showcase individual people rather than the group,” Chirco said.
Chirco said she will miss show choir because she feels like it’s a space where she can be herself.
Bennett Meier, sophomore, said the seniors will be missed by the show choir.
“They’re just amazing,” Meier said. “I hope they do amazing things with their lives.”
