Junior Raghavi Garre, president and crochet captain of the Stitch Club, thought of a way to try to keep the Stitch Club together over this summer.
Garre organized a clothing drive with Mercy Hospital, the Creve Coeur location, to give to a community and build upon her own.
“I saw a girl on TikTok do it for her Stitch Club and I thought that’s amazing we should do that here,” Garre said.
Garre said she started by emailing representatives of the St. Louis Mercy Hospital. Members of the club can make their own crafts and then donate them to the drop off location at 615 South New Ballas Road.
“We’re going to start it now and it’s going to be a summer-long thing,” Garre said. “We’re going to progress it through next school year too, hopefully.”
Stitch Club has been at MHS for four years with 15-20 members. They will be creating baby hats, baby blankets, gloves, and stuffed animals for the drive.
Garre said she loves how it will impact the community.
“This is going to go to people who need it and doing good things for the community is important to me,” Garre said.
Kiera Nickel, junior, said she wants to help out with the drive over the summer by trying to knit a small item because of her busy schedule.
Jordan Shelton, sponsor of the Stitch Club, said the Stitch Club is important because it teaches kids a new hobby.
“I think there is reward in being able to do something productive with your hands,” Shelton said. “It can give you something to fidget with or reach for that’s not your phone.”
Shelton said she played little to no role in the organization of the drive.
“Raghavi did it all,” Shelton said. “All credit goes to her.”
Shelton said the drive is good for giving people motivation to keep practicing their craft over the summer.
“It gives people a purpose in mind to be stitching and knitting for,” Shelton said.
