Girls Volleyball Raises Money for Cancer Research

October marks the month of changing leaves, the coming of Halloween, and the official breast cancer awareness month.

On Monday, October 13th, the JV and varsity girls volleyball teams took part in raising awareness and funds for cancer research during their game against Francis Howell.

Hallie Sidney, sophomore, explained that her team sold shirts and took pledges and donations before the game in order to raise funds for cancer research.

The varsity team also sported pink uniforms on Monday including matching custom T-shirts and bright pink headbands to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Coach Jared Kreienkamp said he has wanted to do a “dig pink” fundraiser for the last few years, but wasn’t able to enact it until this year. Kreinkamp said the support from the community has been great, and they raised over $2,000.

The fundraiser was a success as well as the game.

“That was our best match of the season,” Kreienkamp said. “We played well in all areas and it showed with beating the 4th ranked team in St. Louis in 2 sets.”

Both the team and coach have high hopes for the upcoming district tournament.

“We have our district tournament next week and our goal is to win it.  We will have to play like we did Monday night to have a chance but we are capable,” Kreienkamp said.
