Reading Marathon finishers eat lunch in library

Earlier today, Thursday, April, 17, any student or staff member that successfully participated in the Library’s reading marathon were given the opportunity to eat lunch in the Library. The event included pizza and cookies, a medal for all the finishers and a drawing for Barnes and Noble gift cards.

“[The reading marathon] was an opportunity for people to challenge themselves to do some reading,” Margaret Sullivan, librarian, said. “We always do it during the winter months when sometimes people are feeling the winter blahs and need something just to spice up their life a little bit.”

Sullivan said 80 to 90 people signed up for the marathon this year, pledging to read either three, six or nine books or 1320 pages six weeks.  She said round 30 completed the challenge.

Sullivan read nine books herself, including Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng and The Port Chicago 50 by Steve Sheinkin.

Alex McCray, junior, also read nine books in the time span and attended the lunch. He said his books included the Halo series by Alexandra Adornetto and the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.

“I love to read, so it was something fun to do,” Mcray said.

McCray said the reading was easy, but the hard part about eh challenge was finding time to do it.

“[Reading] is kind of like a gateway for imagination,” McCray said. “It kind of lets me escape from the world for a little bit, so it kind of helps with school and stress. It’s a good escape.”

Rachel Engle, senior, also completed the Marathon and said she felt “special” eating in the Library.

“It’s like you can’t eat in the library, but I can,” Engle said. “I can eat here today.”
