When driving onto campus, Kevin Dunbar, senior, drove in through the Kehrs Mill Road entrance and quickly noticed the new addition of speed bumps to the student parking lot.
The speed bumps were installed by district facilities to the intersection between the track and the tennis courts and the Kehrs Mill Road entrance on Monday, March 3.
“I think it’s a great way to make sure students are staying safe in the parking lot, especially since it can get crazy there, but I wish they at least acknowledged the fact that they were added,” Dunbar said. “I definitely think that was a safety issue on their end.”
Dunbar wished the school administration could have sent out a heads up, letting students know to be careful while crossing over the bumps.
Junior Principal Kyle Devine said the school has gotten calls from parents expressing their concerns about student safety in the parking lot.
“Officer [Steve] Aspinall and I went out to the student lot in the fall and noticed a lot of dangerous driving, especially toward the end of the day,” Devine said
As a way to try and resolve these complaints, Devine requested for the speed bumps to be added.
Officer Aspinall noticed students walking to practice were almost hit during the school day and track meets while driving down the hill.
However, Officer Aspinall was recently notified by administration that the speed bumps might need to be removed.
“The fire department might not like them [speed bumps], especially since they might hurt the fire trucks and mess things up inside their trucks,” Officer Aspinall said.
Devine also added that the screws on the bumps seem to be coming apart, which was the reason why two of the speed bumps were removed.
Chris Wright, hall monitor, said the speed bumps were a great addition to the parking lot.
“I mean, it’s like a NASCAR race in the parking lot, so anything that slows students down and makes them more safe is a great thing,” Wright said. “Student safety should be the most important thing at our school, and adding those speed bumps only promotes it.”
