Model UN with new teacher sponsor is “going well”

Club Spotlight: Model UN

When Eva Johnston, social studies teacher, retired last year, Model UN was left without a teacher sponsor. This year, Katie Jensen, social studies teacher, has stepped up for the role.

Jensen is new to MHS, but said she gained experience working with student events at her old school, organizing homecoming and prom and sponsoring STUCO. While she said getting to know MHS may be challenging, she said Model UN students have been very helpful.

“They’ve been excellent communicators,” Jensen said. “So it’s actually been going pretty seamlessly.”

Jensen said she decided to sponsor Model UN because she was interested in the topic and has never sponsored a club like Model UN before.

“It was largely student lead and I would be facilitating, and I thought that was a very interesting role to engage myself in,” Jensen said. “I get to work with some of the most dedicated and bright kids we have a MHS.”

Model UN co-president Alex King, senior, said Jensen has been organized and did research to prepare herself for the role.

“At the moment everything’s going well,” King said. “We’re about to start recruitment, hopefully get all the new members, and just keep the club growing. I don’t think we’re going to have any trouble.”

King said the club is going to focus on writing better resolutions so they can get more done at conferences.

“It’ll be a little bit different without Mrs. Johnson because she was so organized before and so on top of it, but I think we’ll still be able to do everything to make sure everyone has a good time,” King said.
