Shane Whitehead, freshman, is beginning her first year on the varsity girls swim team after swimming for about two and a half years. She began her career on the Rockwood swim team.

“I kinda tried a bunch of sports and I liked swimming best,” Whitehead said.

Her main events are 100 fly and 50 free, although she sometimes competes in other races. She said her favorite result this year was a victory in 200 medley relay at Parkway South, which she participated in along with other members of her team.

Whitehead said she is looking forward to the rest of the year.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “I’m really hoping to get my state cut in 100 fly. I’m about .3 seconds off.”

Whitehead said she has high conference hopes for the team as a whole as well as for herself.

“I think we’re gonna get first,” Whitehead said. “I don’t wanna jinx it, but we have such good depth.”

She said the best part of being on the team is getting to know people outside of the pool.

“I really like the pasta and the team bonding,” Whitehead said. “There’s a lot of closeness with the team.”

She said she’s especially excited about the end-of-season events like the banquet, as well as competing in state.
