Senior runners are recognized for amazing accomplishments from the season

Marquette Cross Country has consistently been a top sports program at Marquette and in the state. This year was no exception. Marquette Cross country is home to 140 athletes who are all passionate about running.

Michael Kubler, JV runner and junior said that the team has really embraced the talent on the team this year.

“MHS JV boys did very well this year. I was very happy with the way we performed. I enjoy running on this team, it’s a blast. we trained a lot harder this year and it showed.”Kubler said.

MHS JV boys finished the season with three 1st place finishes and three 2nd places finishes out of eight total races on the year. The boys JV team also finished with a team record of 64-13.

MHS JV girls are known for their great team camaraderie among other things. Cece Kayser, Junior and JV runner said that the JV girls team has strong bonds of friendship and is a blast to be on.

“JV girls had a phenomenal season. We just encouraged each other the entire season and supported each other. JV girls is like a family, we’re close, very loving and accepting of all people.” Kayser said.

The JV girls team finished with an overall team record of 42-19. Some highlights of the JV girls team include a 3rd place finish out of 10 teams at the Capital City Challenge in Jefferson City and a 2nd place finish out of 11 teams at the TRXC JV Invitational at Mcnair park.

The Varsity Girls team was led by two strong and talented seniors. Both Hannah Pierson and Danielle Mohrman stepped up to lead an ever changing girls varsity squad that got great results throughout the year.

Hannah Pierson, senior, said that the team found ways to overcome adversity throughout the season.

“Overall we were well prepared. We stayed motivated and encouraged ourselves to just keep getting better. We worked well together and got close. I’m Really Proud of this team and it just goes to show that hard work pays off.” Pierson said.

The Varsity girls team finished with an overall team record of 56-12. Senior Hannah Pierson finished the year as an all-state and first team all-conference athlete placing 14th in the state meet and 3rd in conference. Senior Daniell Mohrman finished 26th in state and 8th in conference. Danielle Morhamn was awarded second team all-conference honors as well. Junior Eva Harrell received third team all-conference honors.

Some highlights of the Varsity Girls season include finishing 2nd out of 11 teams at the Festus Invitational, a 6th out of 22 team finish at The Capital City Challenge, and a 2nd place finish out of 10 teams at Conference.

The Varsity boys team finished 5th in the state, the best Marquette has ever done. Varsity boys had a team record of 109-24. Varsity runner and Junior Thomas Penney said that he was proud of the way that the team came together to achieve their record this season.

“Overall we did pretty well. We got our best state finish ever so i’m very happy with that. We got a trophy in almost every meet. I think if we work hard, we have a solid chance for top three finish at state next year.” Penney said.

Co-Head coach, Melissa Burger,said that the success that the team accrued this season was based on the hard work of the student athletes.

“As a whole our team did an outstanding job. Our boys got 5th in state, our best finish in history. We had Hannah Pierson who is all state, and Danielle Mohrman who was 26th at state. Our girls team also did very well, 5th place at districts.” Burger said.
