MHS fell to the LHS Lancers by a score of 27-20 for their first loss in the 2015-16 regular season.

Jason Powers, senior, threw three touchdown passes in the loss as the varsity football fell to 3-1 on the season.

“We just fell a little short tonight,” Powers said. “Our team couldn’t make the plays necessary for the win and we lost by the touchdown.”

Despite the loss, wide receiver Turner Cook, senior, was able to score a 64-yard touchdown catch, which pulled the Mustangs to within seven points with two minutes remaining in the game.

“We had some big moments tonight. Obviously the fans showed up and really helped us get some momentum. We’re gonna try to work hard and get the next game.” said Powers.

The game was the first time the two rival schools faced off this season.

“Anytime you’re close to another school – knowing that you know the kid across from you – it builds a little rivalry and intensity,” Matt Klein, varsity football coach, said. “The kids are able to go hard all night and it obviously means a lot to them.”

Klein saw no flaws in the team’s game plan or effort, citing lack of execution as the largest issue in the loss.

“We just didn’t make enough plays in big points in the game and it cost us the win,” Klein said.
