The varsity football team opened up the 2015 season with a hard-fought road win Friday, August 21st at Ritenour High School, defeating the Huskies 21-20.

The Mustangs scored early as Senior Quarterback Jason Powers found receiver Cairon Wesley for a 44 yard touchdown to make it 7-0.   Ritenour  marched right back down the field with a 46 yard touchdown pass of their own. The Huskies failed on the 2-point conversion, and the Mustangs held on to a 7-6 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

Although Ritenour would take the lead in the 2nd quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run by TJ Ball, the Mustangs would counter with a Xavier Jackson 3-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14.

MHS would reclaim the lead early in the 3rd quarter as sophomore running back Wendel Bronner scampered for a 64-yard touchdown run of his own, giving the Mustangs a 21-14 lead.

But it was the defense that would ultimately seal the win for MHS.  Lead by Turner Cook’s two 4th quarter interceptions, the Mustang defense kept Huskies from retaking the lead.  Although Ritenour would find the end zone early in the 4th, the 2-point attempt failed, and MHS would ultimately hold on for the season-opening victory.

Powers would finish the game 11-21 for 143 yards, Wesley would tally 77 yards of total offense and the Mustangs would finish the game with a total of 137 yards on the ground.

“We had to show Ritenour that this wasn’t gonna be like last year,” senior guard Jacob Biever said.  “When Jason hit Cairon on the deep pass in the first, we knew it wasn’t going to be like last year.”
