Head baseball coach John Meyer and his streaking Mustangs came into last night’s rivalry game against Lafayette ranked 17th in the area according to STLhighschoolsports.com.

Over the past four games Marquette has outscored opponents Webster Groves, Parkway North, Francis Howell, and Northwest 31-1.

But the Mustangs seemed to lack the same pop shown during early games as starting pitcher Evan Stoll, junior, got off to a rocky start giving up four runs in the first inning.

Stoll eventually picked it back up, fanning three batters through 3.1 innings but MHS still faced an uphill battle, trailing 4-1 at the top of the fourth.

Will Bausinger, junior, took over during the fourth and calmed the Lancer rally.

In the top of the sixth, MHS showed a glimpse of hope but it was quickly diminished when the umpire’s balk call that drove in one was changed.

The Mustangs trailed the Lancers 5-2 heading into the final inning and the atmosphere at Ballwin Athletic Association was hushed.

Charlie Kreh’s single with bases loaded started the rally and MHS never let up.

Spencer Chien’s double to left drove in the tying runs leading to Nick Rauber singling in the go-ahead.

MHS scored four more times before Brendan Glock was thrown out trying to steal second for the final out.

Lafayette scored two more on a double to left but closer Jack Matzen, senior, was able to kill the rally.

Turner Cook, junior, led the team with three hits and two RBIs.

Bausinger received the win after recording one strikeout and allowing two runs in 3 innings.

After MHS’ 10-7 comeback win over rival Lafayette, the Mustangs (10-2) travel to Desmet (10-5) for a double header on Saturday, April 18.
