Head coach Kevin Schultz crouched down in front of MHS’ bench, his eyes fixed on Washington High School’s scoreboard.

A little over two-minutes, it read.

Two-minutes left in the 2015 season.

He stood, his eyes shifting to his teary-eyed players, and called for senior Jack Matzen’s sub.

Matzen, holding back tears, jogged back to his team and embraced Schultz as Coach Derek Hoffman placed his hand on the 6’1 guard’s head.

The Mustangs (16-10) began Thursday’s playoff game against Parkway Central (16-6) on the right foot, outscoring the Colts 21-12 in the first quarter.

MHS’ junior guard Jason Powers put up eight-points in the first after draining two early three-pointers.

But by the half, the Colts cut the lead to two due to the hot shooting of senior guards Jarrett Cox-Bradley and Risaan McKenney.

After coming out of the locker room for the second half, the Mustangs only found solace in Matzen, who scored all seven of the team’s points and at the end of the third quarter, the Colts led by two.

Cox-Bradley and McKenney came alive in the fourth, combining for three contested three-pointers and 14-points.

The Colts outscored the Mustangs 20-11 in the final stretch of the game despite clutch free-throw shooting by McCracken and Powers and a deep three-ball by senior Joe Kimerle.

Powers and Matzen combined for 24-points with seniors Spencer Osterman and McCracken close behind with ten and nine.

Central’s Cox-Bradley finished the night with 25-points after five three-pointers and shooting 6-of-8 from the line.

The Colts will play the Lafayette Lancers (23-3) tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
