Swimming undefeated, takes Conference

The boys swim and dive team has held together an undefeated season after winning the conference meet on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and Thursday Oct. 30.

Head coach Joe Schoedel said the team had set goals at the beginning of the season. After winning the Conference Meet the team has so far accomplished all of their goals.

“We’ve finished the regular season undefeated in Dual meets, Marquette Relay Champs and Lindbergh invite champs,” Schoedel said.

Schoedel explained the team doesn’t have one or two dominant swimmers, but a large group of fast swimmers that carry the team.

“In many cases this season, the boy’s biggest competition has been each other, racing for spots in relays and Conference,” Schoedel said.

In addition to winning the Conference meet, the team set the record for points scored at the conference meet (539). The record was previously set by the 2007 MHS team, a team which was also undefeated.

Trevin Zweifel, sophomore, said Schoedel has pushed the team harder during practices this season.
“I felt like he trained us a lot harder because he knew we had a lot of potential,” Zweifel said. “Practices were a lot harder, we didn’t have any days off, we had a lot more dryland, and we lifted weights too.”

The team will be competing in 18 events at the state meet including relays. Eleven of the team’s swimmers are racing, some in multiple events.

“Our goals for State are to continue to improve our times, and show we can compete with some of the top talent in the State,” Schoedel said.

Grant Maloney, senior, said the last goal the team wants to accomplish is placing in the top 15 in state.
Schoedel explained he has been impressed by his team this year and is looking forward to watching them in the future.

“We have a large team that continues to support each other, and push each other to continue to improve. No matter what is thrown at them, they rise to the challenge,” Schoedel said. “They’ve met all of our team goals to this point, with one big meet left to go.”
