Senior class proposes gift

It is a tradition at MHS for the Senior Class to give the school a gift. The Class of 2015’s gift will be a fountain in the retention pond.

Senior Principal Dr. Dan Ramsey thought of this idea when he was picking his son up from a homecoming dance at Battle High School in Columbia, Mo.

“They had a fountain in front of the school, and I thought it was really cool,” Dr. Ramsey said.

The details have not been worked out yet, but Dr. Ramsey said it will cost a couple thousand dollars. They couldn’t spend as much money on the senior gift this year because last year’s, the electronic marquee, was so expensive.

Marisa Smith, senior, is a part of the senior advisory. She said she is excited for the fountain to be put in the pond.

“It’ll make the water look clean, so it doesn’t look like a big swamp anymore,” Smith said.

Some students have wanted the senior gift to be voted on by the whole senior class, but Smith said it would get too complicated.

“We have a pretty diverse group of people,” Smith said about the senior advisory.

The Class of 2016 is also planning their senior gift for next year. One idea the junior advisory has is replacing the flags hanging from the ceiling on the third floor. There would be a flag to represent each country that MHS students are from.

Junior Principal Michael Mcgehee is in charge of this gift. He said he admired the flags when he first came to MHS.

“It’s a really unique, positive thing a Marquette,” Mr. Mcgehee said. “It would be a great thing to celebrate how diverse our community is here. Also, you can see they’re wearing thin up there.”

Bailey Van Horn, junior, said she doesn’t think this idea is a very good gift for the Class of 2016.

“I think it’s unnecessary because we already have flags up,” Van Horn said.

She said the new flags will probably be many of the same ones already hanging there, so it won’t make a big difference.

“It’s not a very noticeable gift,” Van Horn said. “A senior gift is supposed to be something your grade will be remembered for.”
