MHS welcomes Philosophy Club
February 5, 2016
MHS is the fresh new home to the Philosophy Club started by Brandon Bleyer, junior, and Sam Sherwood, junior.
Sherwood explains how the club first got started.
“Brandon first came up of the idea of a philosophy club due to a lack of philosophy classes here at Marquette. I also felt that our school lacked a serious setting to discuss philosophy, so I assisted in the founding of the club,” Sherwood said.
A motivation for the club was not only because MHS did not have a philosophy class but because other clubs did not fully encompass the topic of philosophy they simple touched on it.
“I felt that, aside from our school’s politics club, there was not a good outlet for students to express their personal views when it comes to philosophy,” Sherwood said.
The philosophy club is an open forum for student to come and discuss their opinion and share it with others, Sherwood said. Co-founder, Bleyer explains the logistics about the club.
“We meet every other Tuesday after school until 4:15pm in room 210. Mrs. Reuther is the teacher sponsor for the club. She’s been really helpful and awesome,” Bleyer said.
Bleyer encourages all students to come attend and share their opinions and knowledge of philosophy.
“For our first two meetings attendance has been excellent. We had 20-25 people the first meeting which increased to 25-30 people the next meeting,” Bleyer said.
Bleyer explained that you don’t have to know much about philosophy to attend.
“So first we introduce a topic in a presentation including what a school argues, the historical context, and its significance. Then we go through discussion questions where we debate the merit of each viewpoint in a Socratic way. After that, we conclude by giving some announcements. we fill everyone in on the basics of each topic at the beginning of each meeting,” Bleyer said.
Bleyer and Sherwood hope to see you at the next Philosophy club meeting where Cooper Hoffmeyer, junior will be presenting over Absurdism (a literary/artistic philosophy).
