Deciding on a nontraditional night out, local teens are begining to veer away from typical weekend pastimes. A local ballroom, Casa Loma, on Cherokee Street in downtown St. Louis provides a swing dancing program for all ages.

Hannah Pierson, senior, was excited about starting swing dancing.

“Many people don’t know this about me but I love to dance,” Pierson said. “It was difficult to get the hang of it at first because you don’t know what you are doing but a little humility is good and it’s fun to improv and make stuff up as you go.”

Not much equipment is required but Pierson mentioned some outfits that are needed for the guys.

“Guys wear dress pants, a button down and sometimes suspenders to add a little 1920’s prohibition look,” Pierson said.

Patrick Brannon, owner of Casa Loma Ballroom, said swing dancing is fun for all ages and Casa Loma accommodates all levels of skill.

Brannon said reservations are not necessary. Doors open at 7 p.m. on Fridays with lessons from 7:15 p.m.-8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays with lessons from 8 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per person or $12 if under age 21.

Lauren Milburn, senior, first heard about swing dancing through senior Kristin Blake’s older brother, Ryan.

“I don’t think I’m very good at swing dancing, but it’s a lot of fun to go with friends. I typically go with a big group of high school kids and grads from my church youth group. A few of my friends from Parkway West are super good, so I like to learn from them,” Milburn said.

Milburn states that swing dancing is rewarding and definitely worth it.

“Even if you’re hesitant about dancing, you and your friends should get out and try it,” Milburn said. “Regardless of your experience, you’ll have a great time! It’s even a lot of fun just watching all of the super good dancers from the side.”

Kristin Blake, senior, said getting out of one’s comfort zone is good and that this energetic and physical activity is much better than just sitting at home.

“I really enjoy swing dancing,” Blake said. It’s something different. It spices up your weekend plans instead of just watching Netflix with friends or going to Starbucks. It’s especially fun when you invite a whole group of people to go and have a great night with.”

One of the most important things to keep in mind is what to wear.

“Most girls wear short flowy dresses. It’s absolutely necessary to be comfortable especially when it comes to shoes.” Blake said.

Curtis Pierson, senior, enjoys swing dancing and has been dancing for more than two years.

“Swing dancing is just what it sounds like: lots of movement with jives and quick steps,” Pierson said. “It’s a little fast paced, but it can be slow as well. If you need a first date, go to Casa Loma.”
