New Apple iPhone 6 receives mixed reviews

Apple released yet another two models of their popular smartphones: the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus on September 19 and within the first 24 hours, both models received 10 million orders, greatly surpassing the 5 million orders the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s received in the first weekend of sale.

When it comes to change, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus both boast technological improvements. The new A8 processor is 25 percent faster and 50 percent more efficient than the A7 processor which provides a win-win with both speed and battery life. The graphics chip is 50 percent faster as well. Another feature is the new M8 co-processor, which can tell when a user is walking or running, as well as estimate distance and elevation. The new models also VoLTE, which is a HD voice technology that makes audio sound clearer.

Like the iPhone 5s, both models will be available in the same colors: gold, white/silver, and space gray. They have the same aluminum exterior. However, the iPhone 6 models underwent some significant changes. The smartphones have rounded edges, a highly accurate color display of sRGB quality, and a HD retina display. The sleep button was also rearranged to the side. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch screen and is 5.44-by-2.64-by-0.27 inches, which makes it the thinnest, but largest iPhone yet. Although it is not quite as big as its main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S5, this feature is controversial amongst many loyal iPhone users, like Nora Madaras, sophomore, who are scared it will not be comfortably maneuverable with only one hand.

“I don’t like that it’s so big,” Madaras said. “One of the biggest advantages of the iPhone compared to the Samsung Galaxy was that it was smaller, but now that size advantage is gone.”

There have also been complaints from customers reporting that their iPhone 6 bent easily due to its thinner shape and aluminum material. This problem is further observed with the even larger iPhone 6.

Although the new iPhone does have some kinks, Apple has publically rebutted the claims of bending, and many others are optimistic of the change . Ben Fassler, senior, bought one of the first 10 million iPhones sold over opening weekend. Fassler said a looming upgrade was the major reason why he got an iPhone 6. Now that Fassler has the iPhone, he mainly has good critique.

“I like that the battery life is better, the camera is a lot better, and obviously coming from an iPhone 4s, the screen is a lot bigger,” Fassler said. “What I don’t like about it is probably the curved screen. When it comes to screen protectors, they don’t really cover it that well.”

Brandon Ingli, sophomore, is a self- proclaimed “Apple fanboy,” who also said Apple is making good decisions with the with the new model.

“I like the new size,” Ingli said. “I think Apple is finally catching up with its competitors.”

Despite Apple’s decrease in market share, the portion of a company’s sales within its market, it seems that many of the technological features along with customer loyalty have kept demand at a good level.

“As far as user experience goes, I think Apple offers one of the best ones you could have,” Fassler said.”
