Van Horn bikes for cancer
March 11, 2015
People can give back in a majority of different ways, but Bailey Van Horn, junior, is giving back through biking.
Van Horn participates in a bike ride called Pedal the Cause. Each team that enters in Pedal the Cause hosts fundraisers and events to help raise money for the team. Eventually, all of the money that the team raises gets donated to Siteman Cancer Center.
“I am a part of team Powered By Hope. We had 190 members on our team last year and we’re hoping to exceed that this year,” Van Horn said.
On September 26th, Van Horn and her team members will ride together for either 100, 50, 25, or 15 miles.
Not only does the team ride for Pedal the Cause, but they also participate in Ride for a Child, which is when they get assigned a child with cancer and then they ride to help raise money for them.
“Currently we race for a child named DJ who is 7 and recently Leukemia free,” Van Horn said.
Her team raised $150,000 last year.
People can donate to individuals or even team Powered By Hope online through the Pedal the Cause website.
Van Horn was introduced to Pedal the Cause by her mom, Renee Van Horn. Renee’s good friend Terri Griege is the captain of her team.
“Teri asked my mom to become co-captain with her so it has become a family affair,” Bailey said.
Renee beat her battle against cancer in 2013.
“It feels extremely rewarding to be able to help the doctors of Siteman Cancer Center,” Bailey said, “They are the reason that my mom is cancer free today.”
