Freshman wrestler medals on varsity
February 19, 2016
Jack Lenox, freshman, has recently drawn attention to his talent and capabilities for wrestling after medaling in recent tournaments including the Westminster tourney, Cape Central tourney, Flyer Classic and the Suburban tourney.
Lenox weighs in at 106 pounds and currently holds a record of 30-4.
10 years ago, Lenox’s father signed him up to wrestle for Bonhomme and he has been dedicated to the sport ever since.
Even with years of experience, wrestling varsity as a freshman has presented its challenges.
In a recent match against CBC, Lenox was up 3-2 with 12 seconds to go. Almost to a victory to add his record, he gave up a takedown which ended up losing him the match.
“I felt like I could have done better,” Lenox said.
In spite of a few disappointing moments, Lenox has also had many rewarding moments as well. In January, Lenox took first in the Suburban Wrestling Tournament. Lenox said that achieving this was one of his most gratifying moments thus far.
To be able to wrestle varsity, Lenox has put in countless hours of work during the season and in the offseason.
During the season, however, Lenox said practices are intense.
In addition to their training, a wrestler’s diet is another essential component of their sport.
“During the offseason, I will eat really unhealthy, but when I have to lose a bunch of weight, I will eat really healthy.”
A typical day of meals for Lenox during the season consists of an egg for breakfast, turkey, yogurt and fruit for lunch, and for dinner, he will eat chicken salad with water.
As for his expectations for the season, Lenox was unsure of how it would play out. But as for the impending future, he has his sights set high.
“I want to make it to state and place highly,” Lenox said.
Lenox calls his coaches his biggest influences. To help him get better, he says they work diligently with him at practice to advise him on what he can do better while continuing to encourage him.
Head Wrestling Coach, Jacob Dieffenbach, complimented Lenox’s work ethic.
“Jack is very sharp and he makes very few mistakes, and if he does make a mistake, he does not make the same mistake twice,” Dieffenbach said. “He is very coachable and an intense competitor.”
Barry Kuebler, senior, competes on varsity alongside Lenox.
“He has a lot of skills. We can always count on him for points in a match,” Kuebler said.
