Varsity football prepares for Homecoming game

Coming off a close loss to Lafayette last Friday, the Mustangs (3-1) play against the Mehlville Panthers (1-3) in tonight’s Homecoming game. The Mustangs have gotten off to their best start in years.

The Mustangs, led by quarterback Jayson Powers, senior, and wide receiver Turner Cook, senior, have recorded wins at Ritenour (21-20), against Northwest (42-0), and at Jackson (41-21), while losing just once against Lafayette (27-20).

Matt Klein, head varsity coach, has been proud of his team’s effort but has made it clear that they will not be allowed to rest on their laurels after their great start.

“Obviously we got beat on Friday, but we came in to lift weights and watch film on Saturday morning and worked hard through the weekend,” Klein said. “From week to week we get in a pretty similar schedule and our kids have been working really hard this week to play a really good Melville team.”
Although it will be the Homecoming game, Klein said that the team has not been trying to elevate their game any differently.

Kellan Murray, senior, said the happenings of the week have not influenced the way that the Mustangs have prepared for Mehlville.

“We obviously have to prepare for any team. We’re gonna play hard even if it’s Homecoming,” Murray said.

Murray said that although it was disappointing to lose to Lafayette last week, the team’s effort still shone through over the course of the game.

“We just have to come out, our confidence has to be high. Mehlville is another good team. So if we play them just as hard as we played Lafayette we’ll be fine,” Murray said.
