Cross country sprints into new season

After finishing sixth overall at state last year, boys cross country have high hopes and expectations for the new season. Despite losing top runners Kyle Lang and Kevin Ganahl last year, the Mustangs still believe they can contend for the District title this year.

“I think we will do very good this year. We have strong underclassmen mixed with an excellent senior class on the boys team,” Spencer Chien, team captain.  “We also have very strong underclassmen on the girls team.”

This year is looking like another strong year for the Mustangs with top runners such as Stephen Naylor, Thomas Penny, Nick Fairlamb, and Ryan Hart on the boys side, and Hannah Pierson along with Danielle Mohrmann for the girls team.

Both teams began the season in Wentzville at Quail Ridge Park during the Fleet Feet Cross Country Kickoff. The boys finished in third place while the girls finished second in a very competitive field.

“We don’t really have any goals set in stone, but I would say both the boys and girls team would like to make it to State, and everyone would like to improve their time,” Chien said.

There are not only high hopes for the team from their fans, but also the teams are holding themselves to very high expectations.

This season should be sure to live up to previous years of MHS dominance on the track. Assistant Coach Jim Kremer believes both teams have the ability to reach the MSHSAA State Championships again this year.

We hope to take both our girls and boys teams to State,”  Kremer said.
