Girls Varsity Tennis competes in the heat
August 22, 2014
Westminster Christian Academy’s tennis team isn’t the only trial the MHS Girls Varsity Tennis Team will face tonight – they’ll also be facing off against the heat.
Maddie Diedrich, senior, is a member of Girls Varsity Tennis.
“I’ve been playing tennis since freshman year,” Diedrich said. “I’ve been on varsity since sophomore year.”
This afternoon is the first game of their season, at 4:15 p.m. at Westminster Christian Academy.
“We should do well today,” Diedrich said. “We lost our number one player recently, but we got another great girl. We all play on pretty much the same level, and we’re all pretty good consistently.”
Diedrich said practicing in the heat has been horrible.
“It’s really hard to practice in the heat,” Diedrich said. “The concrete adds about ten degrees to already crazy temperatures. It messes with your playing game and makes you more tired. We have to drink a lot of water or we get sick.”
Diedrich said the training has been rigorous and not entirely necessary.
“At some point, it’s too much,” Diedrich said. “I’d rather do conditioning indoors. It’s pointless to practice outside in the heat because our games are cancelled when the courts hit 105 degrees.”
While she’s bothered by the state of practices, Diedrich is still excited to play.
“Tonight is going to be great,” Diedrich said. “Everyone should come out and support the MHS Girls Varsity Tennis Team.”
