September 30, 2014
In 2007, Justin Bieber uploaded his first video, a cover of him singing ‘So Sick’ by Ne-Yo, to his YouTube channel ‘kidrauhl.’ In 2008, Cody Simpson uploaded his first video to his channel ‘CodySimpsonMusic.’ In 2013, Sam Miller, sophomore, uploaded her first video, her cover of Patsy Cline’s Crazy, to her YouTube channel ‘Sam Miller.’
Miller said she started playing the guitar during the summer before eighth grade when she was 13 years old. A year later, she started singing.
“I started playing guitar on my on and I started singing on my own,” Miller said, “but now I take voice lessons so that helps me a lot.”
In February of 2013, Miller’s mother told her she should upload a video of her singing to YouTube. After uploading her first video, Miller said she took a break for a couple of months before uploading videos more regularly in 2014.
“I’m not really organized,” Miller said. “I usually make one every two weeks, but you know stuff happens.”
Last June, seven people were subscribed to Miller’s channel. In three months, that number has grown to 120. Her most-viewed video, a cover of her singing Halsey’s ‘Ghost,’ has 1,759 views.
“I usually do songs that are kind of popular, ones that are maybe searched more often on YouTube so they get more views” Miller said.
Miller said she writes her own songs and hopes of going into the music industry.
Taylor Dennison, sophomore, said she thinks Miller has an angelic voice.
“Sam has really big hair, but she doesn’t let that hold her back,” Dennison said.
