Hockey ends season with tie
Monday night the season ended for the Mustangs when they tied the Timberland Wolves, 1-1.
“You can’t tie going into the mini game,” assistant captain, Nick Roux, senior, said.
In pool play of the State tournament they needed to win against the Wolves and then play a 10-minute mini game to decide the winner of the pool. The tie sent the Mustangs packing and the Wolves move on in the series.
Marquette scored first with 9:47 left in the first period.
“Trevor [Schlueter, senior] poked it to me. I was just there to tap it in,” Adam Mohrman, senior said.
The first period ended with the Mustangs up 1-0, but after the break the Wolves came back immediately. They hit the back of the net right outside of Mustang goalie Alex Kalmes’, sophomore, right glove just 24 seconds into the second period.
The second period ended 1-1.
The third period stayed even with Kalmes making a save to keep the score tied. He was faced with a one-on-one and put the puck over the net.
“I just had to save the puck. That’s all I was focused on,” Kalmes said.
Despite the season’s end, Roux is happy with the success of his team.
“I’m proud of how far we’ve come but I wish we would have moved on,” he said.
