Student Spotlight: Brent Kang
Brent Kang, sophomore, started playing the viola in sixth grade. Now he not only plays the viola, but the piano as well.
Although he enjoys playing the viola and making music, he doesn’t know exactly why he started. “That’s a good question,” Kang said, “I guess because it seemed interesting.”
Kang first learned the viola at his middle school, Selvidge. “I liked orchestra.” Kang said.
Recently, Kang has learned to play the piano. He names “K-pop” or Korean pop music as the main factor that made Kang want to learn the piano.
What is most interesting about Kang learning the piano, however, is that Kang is almost completely self-taught.
“I learn on the internet and YouTube using tutorials, also a friend taught me how to create my own music.” Kang said explaining that his favorite part about playing the piano is creating his own music.
“I can create my own music on the piano,” Kang said, “it’s pretty simple”
Although Kang mainly focuses on creating his own music, he also enjoys learning how to play K-pop songs on the piano. Although he doesn’t have a favorite K-pop group, his favorite song is Wedding Dress by Taeyang or 태양 in Korean, a member of famous K-pop group Big Bang.
