Austin Richard, Events Editor

Austin Richard, junior, is the Events Editor for the Messenger. He plays flute and piccolo in Wind Ensemble, guitar in Jazz Band and also performs with Show Choir and Pep band. He is a first-year drum major for Marching Band. Austin spends most of his free time either studying or practicing guitar, flute, or piccolo.

Sharitz helps organize the Casual for a Cause week and said she looks forward to the future of the fundraiser. “I’m really proud of Marquette and our staff that we have been the school that has lead this for rockwood in previous years,” Sharitz said. “I do hope we maintain that leadership position.”

Della Thompson, french teacher, explains the future of going to Notre Dame at an informational meeting for the trip May 1. Thompson said Notre Dame has a strong connection to Paris and to France as a whole. “It’s one of those cultural landmarks that people associate with France and the city of Paris,” Thompson said. “A lot of people have heard so much about it and want to see it in person.”

She is a member of the poetry club and said poetry is sometimes shown in a negative light in schools. “I hear a lot of teachers say that poetry is complicated and confusing,” Millsaps said. “Because of this, students are drawn away from it sometimes.”

The second speaker of the event, Dr. Todd Druley, pediatric oncologist, talks to students about his experience in researching and treating children's cancer. He said he was happy to talk to students about being a doctor, an experience he had wished he had as a teenager. “I grew up in a little farm town on the middle of illinois, so we didn’t have access to a lot of medical specialists,” Druley said. “I think something like this would have been very helpful.”
