Run celebrates life of graduate

Last summer, Paige Hicks, ‘07 grad, was biking from Providence, R.I. to San Francisco, Calif. with Bike & Build to raise awareness and money for affordable housing when she was fatally struck by a truck on the side of the highway.

Within a week of the accident, a crowd assembled on the football field to honor Hicks.

“Friends, teammates and family put together a special ceremony to celebrate Paige’s life,” Missy Burger, varsity track coach, said.

The ceremony included a period of remembrance and reflection, a walk along one of the cross country paths Hicks frequently ran during her time at MHS and ended with time to reflect and assemble a scrapbook for Hicks’ family.

This was exactly the kind of kindness that drew Hicks into both the cross country and track teams during her time at MHS, Dawn Holemon, Hicks’ mother, said.

Now, friends and family are coming together once again to hold the Frisbee Fun Five at MHS, a 5k run and kids Frisbee fun run to raise money for the Paige Victoria Hicks Memorial Fund.

The event will take place on Sunday, June 5, and costs $25 if registered after today. The kids Frisbee fun run costs $15 if registered after today.

“I think that Paige exercised the joy of life and the value of friendships and she would want everyone to come and enjoy being with each other,” Holemon said.

Burger and Mike Ebert, varsity track coach, are helping Hicks’ family organize the event.

“The coaches have been supportive all the way through just checking to see what they can do,” Holemon said. “They were an important part of Paige’s life.”

Burger said she and Ebert are excited to use this event to celebrate Hicks’ life and hopes other teams and clubs will participate in the event.

“She was an athlete that stood out in our program not just for her running expertise but also for sportsmanship,” Burger said. “Above all, she found that being a good teammate and friend was a priority.”
