Letter to the Editor: Gen Z is not “apathetic”

In response to “Make room for Gen Z” I think that a key trait of Gen Z is that they don’t reject the desire for change shared with other generations, but seek to combat it through nontraditional means, as they have identified the constant infighting and entrenched interests of the government as counterproductive to accomplishing social goals. When I see my friends working in multiple charity organizations while balancing schoolwork and clubs, I question the rationale behind remarks that that kids today are “apathetic and lazy”. Although I agree with many of the criticisms of Gen Z, and I don’t necessarily personally agree with the Gen Z viewpoint of government, it is naive to suggest that not choosing to do things the old way is indicative of not caring enough to do it. In the words of political activist Jello Biafra, “I’d rather work for something I want, and not get it, than work for something I don’t want, and get it.”
