Opinion: Libraries will not lose relevance in a digital age

The MHS Library offers a variety of print and digital resources to students and staff. Now, there are more ways to access literature using the internet, yet physical libraries are still imperative.

I registered for my first library card when I was 8. From fantasy to historical fiction, I combed through genres for hours, riding broomsticks with Harry Potter to watching Hilly eat the infamous chocolate pie.

I’ve moved around a lot, but no matter where I went, there was always a local library. There’s something comforting about having a place I can go, free of charge, when the real world feels overwhelming.

Yet, I believe libraries will continue to adapt to the updates of the digital world while still keeping the charm and comfort they have always offered.

Heather Neil, branch manager of the Grand Glaize branch of the St. Louis County Library, has worked with libraries for 11 years and has seen how they can adapt to what the community needs to constantly provide for them.

“As technology is advancing, people need access to learn how to use that technology, and the library is where people can safely come and learn,” Neil said. “The library is vital to help bridge the digital divide, as not everyone in the community has access to the internet to access those resources.”

Many libraries offer WiFi, meeting rooms, study rooms, computers and online resources.

“If you want to learn a new language, we have Transparent Language. If you want to study for the ACT, you can check out a test book at the library or take multiple online practice tests through Learning Express Library,” Neil said.

Libraries across the country adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide commodities to support the public. Neil helped out at the Prairie Commons branch in Hazelwood and the Weber Road branch in South County.

“We were still at work passing out meals for kids and teens, produce and literacy kits. Eventually, they increased the services to COVID test kits, gun locks, diapers, period products, Narcan kits and safe storage kits for medicine,” Neil said.

There will always be a need for information and resources, and libraries will always be there to provide it for free and without judgement. Libraries have shown they can adapt and will continue to for those who need them.
