“The Adam Project” is a science fiction movie directed by Shawn Levy, which follows Adam Reed’s (Ryan Reynolds) accidental visit to 2022 when trying to desperately undo an unfavorable event in his life. Adam meets his 12-year-old self (also accidental) and ends up using his help in trying to save the future – mostly from the mess he has made.

When there’s a new movie on Netflix, I’m always ready to grab a snack, drink and a blanket to embark on an adventure in the comfort of my own home.

This time, the undertaking was through “The Adam Project,” a science fiction movie directed by Shawn Levy, which follows Adam Reed’s (Ryan Reynolds) accidental visit to 2022 when trying to desperately undo an unfavorable event in his life. Adam meets his 12-year-old self (also accidental) and ends up using his help in trying to save the future – mostly from the mess he has made.

The movie was pretty fun to watch, but definitely let me down with its underwhelming plot.

I also wish it wasn’t like every other science fiction movie with time travel: the protagonist goes back in time, messes something up and the rest of the movie is dedicated to fixing it. “The Adam Project” did incorporate some distinct elements by making a Sorian a unique villain, but I still found the main elements of the film such as the time travel were a little dull.

I did, however, enjoy the dynamic between the younger and older Adam. Reynolds was hilarious with his comebacks to his younger self, played by Walker Scobell. I especially liked the scene when older Adam first encountered his younger self, and would continue to sarcastically insult the young Adam, before revealing that he was the older version.

Throughout the movie, I found that the lighthearted dynamic between the characters didn’t change and definitely made the movie much easier to enjoy since the plot was quite underwhelming.

I would’ve liked to see more explanation of the time travel in the film or a few more impactful plot twists at the end of the movie. I found it necessary to remind myself to pay attention to the movie which surely decreased my liking for the film.

If you are looking for a lighthearted movie to watch that doesn’t require much of your attention, I would give “The Adam Project” a shot. That is, if you are fine with glancing at your phone from time to time for relief.
