Both boys and girls varsity basketball won Districts last weekend setting them up to play in this weekend’s State Quarterfinals.
The girls won Districts 75-69 against St. Joseph’s Academy on Friday, March 6. They will compete in the Class 6 State Tournament Quarterfinals game against Jackson High School at 6 p.m. Friday, March 13, at at Fox Senior High School.
Varsity boys basketball is heading to the State Quarterfinal this weekend after winning the Class 6 District 2 Tournament Saturday, March 7, 58-43 against Lafayette. They will go up against Cardinal Ritter at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Francis Howell North High School.
Alexander Komorech, senior, recalls the moment just before Saturday’s victory.
“I look up at the score, we’re ahead 12 points with just 1 minute left,” Komorech said. “And I looked over, and I just realized we were gonna win. We just started laughing.”
Komorech said the cooperation amongst his teammates has helped the team lead its way to the Quarterfinals.
“We just want to be around each other as much as we can and practice as hard as we can, so we know that we’re doing well,” Komorech said.
Derek Hoffman, varsity boys basketball coach, said that after the stress of the game everyone was excited and happy.
“We were off to a good start, then kind of hit a lull when Lafayette went on their run,” Hoffman said.
But at the end of the first half, Brody Owen, senior, shot a three pointer in front of their bench, and Finn Lenahan, sophomore, took a charge, stopping the Lafayette’s team momentum, Hoffman said.
“We have Brody Owen, and we kind of have a one, two punch. Alex Komorich is another senior who has had a very good career and season and was a huge part of our Saturday victory,” Hoffman said.
Hoffman said the boys are always in the gym.
“We’ve been saying since day one we have the ability to beat anybody. We also realize we can lose to anybody. We’re confident, but the team we play on Saturday is very good and we will have to play very well to win,” Hoffman said.
On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Owen scored 47 points against Parkway Central breaking the record of 41 set by Troy Slaten in 2002. The final score of the game was 73-72.
“I didn’t really know I had that many points throughout the game until my coaches told me. I was just trying to win the game,” Owen said.
