Lancers defeat Mustangs, yet Marquette remains optimistic

The Marquette Mustang’s football season ended Friday night with a crushing defeat given by the Lafayette Lancers. The Lancers took an early lead through the air and on the ground, quickly bringing the score to 21-0 by half time.

Although, like the rest of the night, happiness followed disappointment. As it was Seniors’ Night, halftime brought out the seniors of football, cheerleading, Mystique, and marching band with their parents. The names of the accompanying parents and then the student were announced by the ever witty Coach John Meyer. Marching band concluded the halftime festivities with a performance that featured the most extrinsic collection of hats Marquette has ever seen.

The second half started off poorly for Marquette, with a heartbreaking score of 41-7 (the Lancers failed on a two-point conversion for those of you wondering how the score became 41) bringing the came to a close.

However, as the clock was reaching four minutes, a beam of happiness struck down onto the field. Junior Daniel Slattery, quarterback, threw a touchdown to Senior Danny Powers, wide receiver, who ran in in for a touchdown. Senior TJ Kroll, kicker, kicked the extra point in, sealing a happy ending for the Mustangs

Building on top of their last-drive touchdown, next year’s seniors are excited for the future. Junior Adam Ploudre, linemn has high hopes for the future: “Next year is our year. The [Junior Varsity] team is stacked and they’ve posted the best two JV records ever the past two years.”

According the Mustangs website, the JV team is currently 8-1 with a chance to bring their total to 9 wins if they can beat Lafayette Monday night. Starting Varsity Quarterback Daniel Slattery will rejoin the team next year, hoping to claim a winning record.

Even though the season on a dim note, hope is not completely loss.

As fans were exiting the stadium, senior Rob Wieder, saxophone player, sang, “The Sun will come out tomorrow.” Let’s hope it does Rob, let’s hope it does.
