“Kamala is BRAT!” No, she’s a politician. I am deeply disliking the democratic party using pop culture references to advertise to young voters.
Like most of Gen Z, I love Charli XCX’s summer album, “BRAT”. “BRAT” was an iconic concept and will be equivalent to “Hot Girl Summer” for years to come. But, to see that Kamala Harris’ social media pages are the same chartreuse of “BRAT” made me question the advertising for her campaign.
From international conflicts to our economy, we have genuine problems that need genuine solving. What young voters need right now is to start their voting career right. Harris should be advertising young voters to make informed decisions to get her votes, not advertise being “BRAT”.
The democratic party is feeding into the fact that Trump is an unpopular candidate among the younger generation and are assuming that will win them the popular vote within Gen Z. But, Harris is at a vulnerable spot in the election because she came into the running late. If enough of Gen Z were to ask for hard stances on values, such as international conflicts and gun policies and held her accountable, chances are she would stick to her promises to keep the popular vote within the generation.
So why isn’t this happening? Because Gen Z is distracted by Harris being advertised as “BRAT.” Furthermore, “BRAT” encourages the idolization of Harris within the media. She is being put in a light that allows Gen Z to feel like she’s one of us. This leads to comments such as “you slayed” and “queen” on Harris’ TikTok pages.
Harris is running for a job that requires one to make hard decisions that can heavily influence the entire country. This is not something to idolize.
All Americans should be doing the proper research prior to all elections, but Gen Z should be encouraged at the start to prepare correctly, and use democracy to their advantage. If this were the case, democracy would begin to look brighter with each election.
At the end of the day, Harris is still a politician. That doesn’t make her less human, it makes her less trustworthy. This “brat” angle is just to get young voters to see her as relatable and make them want to vote for her.
