The summer activities for Marching Band usually consist of practices, which begin in mid June.
But this year, as they do every four years, Marching Band will be taking a trip to Orlando, Florida, leaving on Sunday, May 27th and returning Friday, June 1st. They will be taking a charter bus.
Stan Minor, Marching Band director, said the trip is meant to be celebratory.
“It’s a time to say thank you for all of their sacrifices,” Minor said. “All the time and energy they put in.”
Though the students going will not be competing in any competitions, they will be marching in a parade at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Marching Band will be practicing for that performance over the next two weeks.
Marching Band will also be taking a day to go to the beach, as well as Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and Universal Studios, Minor said. The group, Minor said, is very excited about the trip.
“You can’t be unhappy going down to see Mickey,” Minor said.
Despite the $800 price tag, Minor said many students have found the trip affordable with fundraising opportunities. At least ten kids, Minor said, have been able to totally pay for the trip with fundraising money.
Sarah Healy, senior, will be going on the trip for Color Guard, and said she is excited to go. Healy said she didn’t have time for fundraising, but her family was able to pay for the trip out of pocket.
Healy has been a part of Marching Band since she was a freshman. The trip will be her last performance.
“It’s going to be sad to see it end,” Healy said. “But being a senior, I’m ready to move on.”
