The National Honor Society (NHS) has paired up with Key Club to hold a canned food drive, as one week of this year’s Giving Month.
Originally it was scheduled from Monday, Nov. 14 to Friday, Nov. 18. However, the drive was extended until today, Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Ashley Kuykendall, senior and NHS president, said since NHS did the canned food drive last year, they decided to do it again and weave it into Giving Month.
“We did it last year too, but we did it not during Giving Week,” Kuykendall said. “We thought it would be a good idea to incorporate it into Giving Month.”
NHS has set a goal of collecting 10,000 cans which will be sent to a food pantry in Earth City. As of Friday, Nov. 18, they had collected 1,301 cans.
“They’re going to make kits for families for Thanksgiving for those who don’t have money,” Kuykendall said.
Brooklyn Parks, senior, donated six cans to the food drive.
“A girl in our class was complaining about how many cans MHS had raised,” Parks said. “So I asked my mom if we had any cans.”
Parks said it made her feel good to donate.
“I appreciate how it makes it a simpler way to donate,” Parks said. “I’m glad to be able to help.”
Kuykendall said the drive is a good opportunity for students.
“People should donate cans because it’s a good opportunity for people who have enough food to be able to donate to those who don’t,” Kuykendall said. “We live in an affluent area so it’s good for students to be able to help those who are less fortunate.”
