During each school year, fifteen books are chosen by the Missouri Association of School Librarians for the Gateway Books readers award nominees. This year, the fifteen books range from “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, “Paper Towns” by John Green and “Playing With Matches” by Brian Katcher, among many others.
To vote for their favorite Gateway book, students can go to the library and fill out a ballot that then is sent in to the Missouri Association of School Libraries with all of the tallies counted.
To be eligible to vote for a Gateway book nominee, a student must have read at least three of the nominated books, Lee Mitchell, head librarian said. Students can vote for one of the fifteen choices until Thursday, Mar. 17.
“I predict that ‘The Hunger Games’ will be the overall winner because it’s so widely popular,” Mitchell said. “And personally, I liked ‘Sweethearts’ [by Sara Zarr] the best.”
Mithcell said the MHS Book Club and Virtual Book Club always read at least three of the Gateway books each year and recommends that students come to the next Book Club meeting which will meet on Tuesday, Mar. 29 where they will be discussing the book “Five Flavors of Dumb” by Antony John, which is not a Gateway Book.
