“[Having a ceremony] is a nice tradition and it makes receiving the class ring more memorable,” Sophomore Principal Dr. Dan Ramsey said. “Students used to get their rings at lunch and the ceremony gets everyone involved.”
The ceremony will be held Monday, May 23, at 7:15 a.m. It is so late in the year because of all the available parking for parents after seniors leave.
Anytime before the ceremony, sophomores are asked to bring in a baby photo of themselves to run in a slideshow. Photos should be submitted to the Sophomore Office with their name on the back of the photo. The purpose of including the baby photo is to show how the students have grown—a look at then and now, Dr. Ramsey said.
“[MHS] has never had a ceremony before,” Dr. Ramsey said. “It should be a great experience for the student and will definitely add value to receiving their rings.”
While Dr. Ramsey said he is looking forward to the ceremony, Courtney Droege, senior, said she disagrees with the upcoming event.
“It’s pointless,” Droege said. “They’re not seniors and special ceremonies should be for senior year only.”
Droege said she purchased a class ring her sophomore year and wears her ring almost everyday.
“I wanted a way to remember high school by, since the only thing we get to remember high school is with our diplomas,” Droege said.
Droege said having a ring ceremony her sophomore year would not have influenced her ring purchase.
“I would have gotten one anyway,” Droege said.
Dr. Ramsey said now that sophomores will receive their class rings during a ceremony, an increase in ring purchases will eventually happen.
“It probably won’t happen initially,” Ramsey said. “But in the future, maybe.”
Sophomores had a presentation about buying class rings on Monday, Jan. 31, and they must turn in their order forms on Thursday, Feb. 10 or Friday, Feb. 11.
