Justin Baris crowned Mr. Mustang

On Thursday, Nov. 1, MHS held its annual Mr. Mustang competition. The competition serves as a “male beauty pageant” and allows male students to show off their talents.

The contestants are nominated from their sports teams, clubs, activities, and specific classes at MHS.

Each contestant is judged on their entrance, formal wear, boxer dance, and skit. The top ten that are chosen then answer questions individually in order to move on to the next round.

Ashley Porter, social studies teacher, is in charge of the coordinating practices and running the event.

“My favorite moment was at the end of the boxer dance when all the guys sang Journey,” Porter said, “It was something that had never been done before.”

Justin Baris, Mr. Model UN, won first place, with Mike Owens, Mr. Band, and Jeff Klein, Mr. Pun Contest, as runner-ups.

“My inspiration was Mrs. Eva Johnston,” Baris said, “She’s given me love and support over the years.”

Baris said to prepare for the competition he did a lot of push-ups, jumping jacks, and he got his nails done. He said he plans to take advantage of winning by wearing his tiara every day.

“My most memorable moment was seeing Mrs. Mitchell’s face when I made that joke about her,” Baris said.

In addition to the jokes and fun of Mr. Mustang, the event raised money for prom. Through the Fan Favorite Award, where people can donate money and enter into a contest for a flat screen TV, exactly $699 was raised.

“This was the first year we had the Fan Favorite Award.” Porter said, “It was a great edition that allowed more crowd participation.”
