Teachers share about second jobs

Steve Selle

What is your second job?

In the summer, I do construction with Coach Olivo.

Where do you work?

Olivo and I are self-employed and we call our little business Selle Olivo Solutions.

What do you do for your job?

I draw the plans and figure out the design like what size pieces of wood to use. I also submit plans for the bigger projects in Chesterfield.

What projects have you done?

We’ve done decks; Coach Olivo is fabulous with tiles. We’ve also done Coach Schneider’s staircase.

How do you feel about your second job?

I love it because it’s totally different from what I normally do. It’s really hard and would kill me if it was full time, but it’s just in the summer.

Janet Houseman

What is your second job?

I work for a corporation called Odyssey Hospice.

Where do you work?

The building is in Westport, but I work in the facilities where the sick people are held.

What experience do you have?

I am a licensed and certified massage therapist.

How does your second job tie in with the subject you teach at MHS?

I have to have very good communication skills, which helps when teaching my language arts and creative writing classes.

Tom Cook

What is your second job?

I work at the Drury Plaza Hotel, next to the Chesterfield Mall.

What do you do at your job?

I’m in charge of evening snacks and drinks where I set up free snacks for the guests, hand them out, and clean up when it’s over.

Why do you have a second job?

I have a second job because I’m still paying off student loans.

How do you feel about your second job?

I like it, the shifts are from 4:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. so they’re short. It’s easy too, you just work and leave, there is no thinking involved like there is with teaching.

Kevin Juergens

What is your second job?

I work for a company called Consumers First Insurance.

What experience do you need?

You have to pass a state insurance license test.

How do you feel about it?

I like it because usually the only way I get business is if you save people money and I get to inform people how to save money.

How does your job tie into what you teach?

I tell kids how driving affects insurance policies.
