Carl Taraporevala, senior, practices playing his character Peter alongside Ava Smith, senior, who plays Molly Aster, in this fall’s production of “Peter and the Starcatcher.”
Marquette Theater Company (MTC) will be performing the play “Peter and the Starcatcher,” the origin story of Peter Pan and Neverland, this fall.
This is different from previous years because MTC typically performs a musical in the fall and a play in the spring. However, due to a variety of scheduling conflicts and changes, like moving finals before Winter Break, the play and the musical have swapped.
Rebecca Blindauer, MTC sponsor, said she isn’t sure if this change will remain in place for next year. However, she said this will be a positive change that would be good to keep.
“I think a musical generally requires a lot more from everyone just because there’s singing and dancing and acting and all of the pieces coming together,” Blindauer said. “It might be nice to not have to jump right into that at the beginning of the year.”
The play will run Thursday, Nov. 21, to Sunday, Nov. 24,
“Peter and the Starcatcher” cast members wait for Rebbeca Young, theater teacher, to call rehearsal to order. While they wait, students talk amongst themselves while eating candy. “Everything about performing in theater brings me joy and
excitement,” Josie Oliver, freshman, said. “It also gives me something to do outside of school and meet new people.” Oliver will play the role of Sanchez in the upcoming production.
“Peter and the Starcatcher” cast members walk around the set to get a feel for it during an after-school rehearsal. The play will run Thursday, Nov. 21, to Sunday, Nov. 24,
Theater students Allie Lappin, senior; Sofia Chirco, junior; Bennett Meier, freshman; Ben Ehrhart, freshman; and Dhruv Chakravarthula, sophomore, use the time that theater teacher Rebecca Young has given them to walk around on the set to create a dance formation for fun.
Theater cast members of “Peter and the Starcacher,” seniors Lillian Hunyar and Jackson Warden pose dramatically on top of the set build structure. To the side, seniors Drew Mathers and Carl Taraporevala are in conversation about their blocking.
This work belongs to costume crew member Kris Miller, junior, who has sketched out possible costume designs for the play. “Peter and the Starcatcher” is the origin story of “Peter Pan and Neverland.”
This is a lineup of costumes used in the theater that are currently hanging in a section of the closet labeled ”Blazers and Jackets.” Hundreds of costumes are archived in the costume closet to be reused in future productions.
This colorful display is a lineup of dresses used in theater productions that are stored in the costume closet. The theater students arranged these clothes in rainbow order.
Sophomore costume crew members Molly Fitzpatrick, Karina Ramirez and Brooklyn Merker put the extra theater wigs in a storage bin in order to maximize space in the already cramped costume closet. They do this so that all of the wigs are easily accessible.
Molly Fitzpatrick, sophomore, dusts off a pink and glittery wig as she puts it gently into a box for safekeeping, as she has to do this with all of the wigs in the costume closet until they are all in the box.
Carl Taraporevala, senior, has been a part of every MTC production since his freshman year. Taraporevala will be playing Peter in “Peter and the Starcatcher.”
Taraporevala said he hopes to bring the cast and crew together to create a better production for everyone involved.
“The help that I’ve gotten from the upperclassmen, I want to give that to the lowerclassmen as well as keep growing and keep doing better every production,” Taraporevala said.
Bennett Meier, freshman, was cast to play Teddy in “Peter and the Starcatcher.”
While this is his first production with MTC, Meier was a part of all of Selvidge Theater Company’s productions.
“I’m really excited for the set. I’m really excited to see how it turns out and how it’s different from middle school,” Meier said.
