This will be the end of his fifth semester here at Marquette. Junior, Max Lipel, not only takes weighted grade courses and maintains at least a 3.5 GPA, he plays baseball.
“I played baseball my freshmen year and sophomore year,” Lipel said. “I’ve been playing since I was eight, and it’s always been my favorite sport.”
Lipel said he played on the JV team during the 2013 season, and on the Freshmen team in 2012.
“I’m not great at hitting so I only pitch,” Lipel said.
Lipel said he’s small, but he makes up for it by throwing a knuckleball.
“I learned how to throw it the summer after freshmen year,” Lipel said. “It’s getting better but I have to continue practicing my grip and consistency.”
Lipel said his favorite position has always been pitcher, yet he’s played a few other positions since the time he started.
Pitching is a good position for Lipel, he doesn’t like hitting and he’s left handed.
Left handed pitchers often have the edge over right handed pitchers, mainly because lefty’s have a different release point, and they’re less common then righty’s.
During the summer Lipel plays for the Ballwin Legion baseball team, he and others from MHS play with him as well. He started playing Ballwin Legion his freshmen year.
During the winter, MHS Baseball holds workouts almost leading up to the week of tryouts, which is at the beginning of March.
Lipel attends all of the workouts, hoping to get stronger and increase his throwing speed.
