There are three types of debates and over a dozen speaking competitions MHS students participate in.
“It’s good for people to be able to look at issues and weigh both sides of an issue plus it teaches them how to research and express their opinion, and have confidence in themselves”, said Dennis Kane co-advisor of Marquette debate.
“The main goal of debate is to develop your argumentation skills so that you can apply them to other settings, and not just debate”, said Daniel Glossenger co-advisor for debate.
Anyone can join debate. During the first year of joining the novices compete against each other.
“Obviously if you come in with a sense of knowing what is going on with the world and knowing how to speak well publicly it helps you out a lot”, said Joey Dickinson, Senior.
During his freshman year Dickinson joined debate and said he wasn’t a great public speaker and didn’t know a lot about the world. That year he went on to win many competitions against other novices. He qualified for state his Junior year.
Meetings are held Mondays and Wednesdays after school in room 104.
