Half days usually end with crowds of students flooding to the Subway less than a mile down Clarkson Road. Lines at the sandwich shop usually stretch out the door, and the tables in the front are littered with books and backpacks.
But last half-day, Tuesday, Sept. 14, Sarah’s Cake Shop had its own long line of students. The small bakery, just a few doors down from Subway, serves a variety of cupcakes, with a menu that changes each day.
The shop itself, situated close enough to walk from MHS, greets you with the smell of fresh baked goods, and is well decorated with brown walls, bright green logo, a table and stools and even a bench with a coffee table strewn with magazines.
At the front window of the store is a display full of custom cake designs of various sizes.
“We have our cake book with pictures of different designs,” Sarah Osborne, employee at Sarah’s Cake Shop, said. “Or customers can bring in their own ideas and we’ll work with them.”
When I got through the line to a neat array of cupcakes and other treats, I had a hard time deciding. I finally purchased a Chocolate Banana Hazelnut cupcake, which came in its own box, for just under $3. With light chocolate buttercream icing and moist banana cake, the cupcake was neither too sweet, nor too heavy.
“We use high quality ingredients, ”Osborne said. “And everything is baked fresh each day.”
Unique to Sarah’s Cake Shop is the Mobile Cupcake Truck, which you can rent for any outdoor event. Similar to an ice cream truck, it sells cupcakes at $3 each, just like in-store.
Osborne said business at the cake shop has been great, and being close to MHS has helped.
Overall, the cupcake was well worth the wait and the slight overpriced. Sarah’s Cake Shop is a great new option for anything from a quick, baked snack, to a large custom-made cake.
