Last year’s Opening Day on April 7 brought a Cardinal shutout of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a score of 0-9. This year, Opening Day will be held on Thursday, March 30 at 3:10 p.m. against the Toronto Blue Jays at Busch Stadium.

Since he was a child, Senior Principal Dr. Rick Regina has held a special place in his heart for the St. Louis Cardinals Opening Day.

“I’m a big baseball fan — it brings back memories of my childhood,” Dr. Regina said. “But I think as I get older, Opening Day is more of a fresh start and it’s a night to enjoy with my family.”

Dr. Regina said that he looks at Opening Day as a sort of personal holiday.

“I wish we were off school today,” he said. “That would be a lot of fun.”

Dr. Regina said he strongly believes this year’s Cardinal lineup will be strong and propel the team to victory. He is especially excited to watch Jordan Walker, a 20-year-old highly anticipated prospect on the Cardinals.

“That’s exciting for me, having somebody that young on the team,” Dr. Regina said.

Brett Silverman, senior, participates in a program called Green Team, which is a group of volunteers that help pick up recyclables within Busch Stadium between innings. As a volunteer, Silverman gets into Cardinals games for free. He has attended Opening Day as part of the Green Team for the past four years.

“I guess Opening Day is just straight up fun,” Silverman said.

Silverman said he has high hopes for the team this year, especially with all the new talent and a strong lineup.

“We’re winning the Central this year,” Silverman said. “It’s going to happen because we’re better than the Cubs, better than the Brewers, better than all those other teams.”

Sam Shackelford, senior, plays baseball and said he understands the game on a different level.

“I think a lot of people talk about baseball and they’re like ‘it’s boring and slow’,” Shackelford said. “But for me, since I play the game, I see everything that’s going on.”

Outside of the overall game, Opening Day provides many other fun attractions and festivities that are special to Busch Stadium and St. Louis.

“It’s fun because you get to see the horses and the dog,” Shackelford said. “They also drive on trucks.”

Shackelford said he’s ready for baseball to come around again and is excited to watch the Cardinals play with new players, such as Wilson Contreras as the team’s new catcher replacing Yadier Molina who retired last year after 19 years. Shackelford is glad to have more of an offensive catcher on the team in Contreras, and is excited for the potential of all spots in the lineup, one through nine.
