Not once, not twice, but five years in a row, varsity cheer has placed first at Regionals.
Over the summer, cheer went to Regionals at Borgia High School in Washington, MO and beat runner up, Eureka High School.
Natalie Komnick, senior, is a co- captain along with another senior, Mackenzie Anderson.
Komnick, who has been on varsity since she was a sophomore, said that the team’s routine for Regionals was very good and came together really well.
“Our routine was three minutes,” Komnick said. “We practiced it during the summer from 6:50 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.”
Whenever varsity cheer practiced in the summer, it was strictly for competitions.
When asked about the teams expectations for this year, Komnick said, “I don’t think you can ever expect to win, but we definitely want to win.”
Abbey Gradle, varsity coach, said that she was confident in the routine, and would’ve been happy with any result.
“It’s a three minute routine, but one of the three minutes is used for cheering,” Gradle said. “The other two minutes are used for tumbling and more aerobic movements.”
Returning State champs, Liberty High School, will be one of the eight teams competing in the State competition this year.
“State will be held on September 15th at Missouri University,” Komnick said. “We’re going to try and do our best to beat Liberty, but they are a really good team.”
