Mustangs faced off against the undefeated Lancers Friday night in the district semifinals game. Marquette lost 35-0 and ended the year with a 5-6 record.
The Lancers scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and one in the second and third quarters, taking extra points from field goals on each.
Mustang offensive momentum suffered from calls throughout the game, including back to back calls in the second quarter that stopped play and kept running back Charles Turner from a breakaway run.
Matt Scheibel, wide receiver, recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter and made it fifty yards before being stopped by the Lafayette defense. A call on a personal foul, however, took the Mustangs back to the origin of the play.
Head coach Ryan Thornhill said he had expected a different outcome from the game.
“Obviously we were very disappointed with the outcome,” Thornhill said. “Lafayette’s a very good ball club. They are ranked third in state for a reason, so we obviously didn’t do enough to win but I’m proud of our team.”
Thornhill said Lafayette’s strength was in its speed and athletic ability, but that the Mustangs worked hard throughout the game.
“You kind of have to go off the score but they played hard,” Thornhill said. “There’s no give up in them, and they played hard the whole ball game.”
Defensive coordinator Jason Schneider said the team had a good season overall.
“I think the seniors put in a lot of time and a lot of effort,” Schneider said. “They did a great job with it and there were really some kids that stepped up in roles and did a great job. I’m very happy with them all.”
