Over a decade after Stacy Arnson set the MHS girls basketball record for most points in a game with 33, Taylor Campbell, sophomore, tied it on Friday, Jan. 20 against Mehlville.
Campbell said it was a good game because the 69-36 win snapped the team’s five game losing streak. She said her parents told her they thought she broke the record, then later that night she saw a tweet from Tim Bowdern, varsity assistant coach.
Bowdern’s tweet said, “Congrats to Taylor C. who tied a mustang record. She ties for most points in a game. “33” vs Mehlville tonight.”
Campbell said it was cool to tie the record, but she hopes to beat it in the future. Beating the record is something to work for, Campbell said.
Elisabeth Myers, junior, said Campbell is aggressive and she makes her own way to the basket, which helped her score so much. She also said she has above-average skill for her grade level.
“As a freshman, she was timid,” Myers said. “She used to take a lot of shots, but now she drives to the basket more.”
Myers said there is a strong possibility that Campbell will break the record because she is only a sophomore and has many more games to play in her career.
Scott Cleer, girls basketball coach, said it was a good game because all of the players played together, and it was a game in which the team was able to pressure Mehlville and get steals. Cleer said he envisions Campbell doing even better in the future.
“She will definitely break the record,” Cleer said. “I see her as one of those sophomores who scores 40 points in a game.”
