Runners find fresh, healthy way to celebrate Halloween

The words trick-or-treat, witches, goblins, warlocks, candy and jokes do not usually come to mind when thinking of mileage, sprinting, sweating, athletic and running.

However this year the two group of words will combine during cross country’s Halloween Fun Run.

The run has been a tradition for about seven years, however since Halloween has been on the weekend for the past couple of years the cross-country team has not been able to do the run, Mike Ebert, cross country coach, said.

“The run really started when a couple of athletes on the team started it by wearing costumes and trick-or-treating while going on a short run,” Ebert said.

Since Halloween falls on a Monday this year, any team member will be able to participate in the run if they chose, Ebert said.

“All the run is for is to let the team have fun,” Ebert said.

Senior Jeff Orf, cross country runner, said the run will bring the team together and enhance the feeling of the team being a family.

The run is really low key, Ebert said. It consists of the cross-country runners dressing up in costumes and running in the neighborhood Dunn Hill at 4 p.m.

“During my years of being a cross country, coach I have seen some memorable costumes like sumo suits, chicken suits and trash cans, which all are interesting to run,” Ebert said. “Most of the crazy costumes don’t usually make it through the whole run.”

Sophomore Jessica Thatcher, cross-country runner, is trying to decide between being an iPod or zombie prom queen. However, Orf is not willing to give away his secret plans for his costume.

Both runners agreed what they are looking forward to the most about the run is dressing up in costumes, running and the candy.

Orf said the people they are getting candy from will be confused answering the door.

“I feel they will be perplexed that high school students are running around in costumes at 4 p.m. asking for candy,” Orf said.
